In 1977/78 the First XI played in what was arguably the most intriguing Grand Final in the history of Ballarat cricket.
In the four day final our opponent Brown Hill batted until 4.59 p.m. on the second day scoring 346 runs. During this innings
Wendouree players dropped ten catches. Our luck changed during the first three balls after the tea break when Colin McCrow
took a magnificent hatrick. However the Brown Hill tail wagged reaching a score of 346. At stumps on the second day
Wendouree was 2 for 19. At the conclusion of the third day's play we had reached 5 for 256 with Peter Brady scoring 120 and
Bryan Metcalfe 59. Early on the fourth day Wendouree slumped to 7 for 277 with Colin McCrow scoring 62 after taking 5
wickets for 79 in Brown Hill's first innings.[a magnificent all round performance by the affectionatley known 'CRUNCHER']
The score advanced to 9 for 304 before Kerry Gillman and Daryl Wilson staged a magnificent 112 minute 10th
wicket partnership which brought 41 runs and the team to within 2 runs of victory. Daryl finally lost his wicket for 7 while
Kerry remained 31 not out....... A loss by the narrowest of margins but what a magnificent game of cricket.
During the 1978/79 season the First XI lost a game against Mt. Clear after the opposition claimed the game on the second
day. This was due to the fact that we did not have our set of stumps at the ground for the commencement of play. There
is no doubt that we were at fault and when Mt.Clear claimed the game, the officiating umpires had no choice but to 'award'
them the match. What a way to win!
